San Pantaleo (Olbia)


Description

It is a district of the town of Olbia, located in the heart of the Gallura region, between the Mounts of Cugnaga. From that privileged position the town enjoys a splendid view of the Costa Smeralda: it is a charming place, rich of granite rocks, such as the peaks of St. Andrew, Pelchia Minori and Pelchia Manna, where people in research of a quiet and peace, between the beauties of the coast, away from the confusion of daily life. These treasures create the ideal destination for the tourists, that visit it throughout the year. The center is famous for the production of fine wooden, ceramic and wrought iron objects.
Up until the XVII century, the Gallura region was characterized by the presence of a just a few towns located inland. The coast was uninhabited because the territories were too vulnerable to pirate attacks and difficult to cultivate. In the early XIX century some shepherds from the nearby Corsica began to breed their flocks in this part of the Sardinian coast and the assistance of the local Bishop allowed the development of area. Even though it is located far from the Costa Smeralda, it has always shared a similar history. Originally part of the municipality of Nuchis, which has now been incorporated into the city of Tempio-Pausania, in 1938 San Pantaleo became a district of Olbia. Since the 70s of the XX century, the area has become home and source of inspiration for several famous artists, which has made it famous World-wide for its atmosphere.

Attractions:
- the Parish Church of San Pantaleo;
- the Basilica of San Simplicio in Olbia, built in granite stone, in a period between the XI and XII centuries, on a hill. The façade is bounded by pilasters and features at the centre a series of arched windows with marble columns. The church is flanked by a Bell Tower erected in a later period. Within it features three aisles divided by columns and pillars, the apse is decorated with frescoes that depict scenes of the life of San Simplicio;
- the Church of San Paolo of Olbia, which is a small stone building;
- the Church of Our Lady of Cabu Abbas, near the centre of Olbia;
- the Church of San Vittore in Olbia;
- the Church of the Holy Spirit;
- the Church of Santa Mariedda;
- the Church of Sant'Angelo;
- the Church of Saint Lucia.
